The Charity

The chosen charity for this challenge around the world by bicycle is Mucopolysaccharide (MPS) Ireland. Mucopolysaccharide is a rare metabolic diseases which includes conditions such as Hurler,Scheie, Hunter, Sanfilippo and Morquio.

There are so many worthwhile charities it is very difficult to select just one. MPS however is close to my heart as our angel Gavin was affected by this disease. It also thanks to Gavin that I have been bitten by the travel bug. My first trip abroad was with my cousin Gavin, his sister Rachel and my aunt and uncle Carol and Oliver. It was an action packed camping holiday to France where we all lived on adrenaline for the entire three weeks. I left France by ferry smiling whilst my stomach churned less than the thoughts of my next adventure ran around my head. I feel that this adventure is a fitting tribute to someone who introduced me to my love of travel in the first place.

I'm no expert on MPS so for those interested here is what I shamlessly copied from the MPS Ireland website:

What causes these diseases? There is a continuous process in the body of replacing used materials and breaking them down for disposal. Children born with a Mucopolysaccharide or related disease are unable to produce one of the enzymes essential for this process. If even one enzyme is missing, the cycle is interrupted. Used materials cannot be broken down and remain stored in the cells of the body. The effects of this disease can be mild for some, but for many the diseases cause severe disabilities. In most cases growth is restricted. Some diseases cause progressive mental as well as physical handicap. Those diseases causing severe mental handicap may also lead to death in childhood.
